FOOL’S GOLD

Lorimoto gallery is pleased to announce the opening of “Fool’s Gold”  an exhibition of three artists who publish zines and comics generated from their art practices.

Historically and literally,  the exceptional value of gold motivated humans to advance all facets of civilization .  In this quest , wars were fought , caused mass migrations and kept us in motion towards the wealth it generates.

Symbolically “Gold” is happiness .  The golden moments of a human life can be found in all sorts of human activities.  Like the  warm ray of light from the sun , it provides a sense of happiness that we all cherish and live for.

An artist is definitely a “gold “ miner.  Artists  share similar levels of struggles of a miner digging for valuable minerals.  Golden moments for an artist can be in the studio , or in any moment when their art is being recognized as extraordinary and valuable.

Zines and comics are like little nuggets of gold for the fanbase.  I fondly remember the “golden” moments in my youth indulging in a new graphic novel or a fan zine of my favorite band.   Such “golden” moments are hyper subjective.  Something that brings happiness to one might not translate well to others. The term “ Fool’s Gold “ is used to mockingly describe something with a  fanatic believer or a passionate fan when their motivation is incomprehensible.

In mineralogy , “Fool’s Gold” is an existing metallic ore called Iron Pyrite ( FeS2 ).   The color resembles real gold and it fooled many miners during the California Gold Rush.  Once thought as worthless , recent studies proved that real gold does exist in its crystalline composition.   Though the gold content is minute in quantity  , after all “Fool’s Gold”  wasn’t entirely foolish.

We are featuring 3 artists who distinctly seek and produce “gold”  - Tana Oshima  , Panayiotis Terzis and Zebadiah Keneally are artists who maintain their studio practice and produce publications in the form of Zines and comic books.  All three artists are fiercely original and their stylistic differences are vast.

Tana Oshima - is a translator / writer / painter / comic book artist who has a distinct style of depicting mundane yet philosophical moments of life.

Panayiotis Terzis (Pan) - is a master risograph print maker who uses the full spectrum of colors with motifs from greek mythology , hand gestures and sci-fi esque compositions.

Zebadiah Keneally aka Hamburger Vampire - is a multi disciplinary artist who produces videos of his performances and drawings .  Contrast to his whimsical and humorous art , his approach and methods of producing work is extremely disciplined and stoic.

The exhibition will consist of original art work - paintings / drawings / prints  as well as publications produced by each artist.
Please join us on April 16th 6~9pm for the Opening Reception
